Unlike a vast majority that would just give up and throw in the towel, I can't seem to take that route. My heart is into making my body better.
Pointers for a successful run/workout are found after the jump!
Set workout goals. By the end of your workout, what do you want to accomplish? Knowing this is important because it will help you keep your pace and run to your max during your workout. I set distance goals, time goals and/or calorie goals.
Keep a steady pace. I have been lapped by a runner twice and my pace didn't budge. Want to know why? Because I know my own limits. I know what I wanted to achieve by the end of that workout, and had I tried to keep up with her, I would have flatlined before I knew it. The word "steady" is relative. My steady pace is not yours, so as long as you are keeping your heart rate up and it's "steady", so is your pace.
Dress comfortably. No one is looking at what you have on... really, they aren't! I like to wear layers when I run, that way, if I start burning up, clothes can come off. Additionally, if it's breezy outside, I can have my jacket for after the workout and on my walk back. I also wear a scarf when I run. Why? Because I want to protect my hair! I won't let my hair stop me from running, so I do what I have to do. Do people judge? Maybe. But I still get my workout in!
Don't judge a runner by their pace. Just because they sprint past you doesn't mean that they have your endurance or are running for similar goals. Every runner has a story. I run to beat my personal goals whereas I have seen a couple guys running along side me (actually passing me) because they are training for an Iron Man competition. I have also seen those same guys fully stopped and resting. I have seen people passing by me more moderately paced as well. Have they been running for a long time? Are they tired from just one mile? Who cares. Focus on YOUR run, your pacing, and your workout. Let them figure out their own.
If you stop for breaks, stretch or drink a little water - NEVER FULLY STOP! When I stop, my momentum is gone. I break my workout and my run is never the same. If you need to slow down, walk - briskly! If you need water, drink it for no more than 30-minute. If you need to just stop moving, stretch! Don't ever just stop. Your heart rate needs to be up in order for your workout to be successful!
Don't give up and give it all you've got! You've got this and no one can take this from you but yourself.
My prize is not the one in which everyone competes for! I set goals. I reach my goals. I will get MY prize.
How do you stay encouraged while working out?
