Laurie Singer is a force to be reckoned with! She was the first person to clear out her living room just to teach me how to do a back handspring. We have been cool since I can ever remember, and I am more than delighted to have her featured on the site. Gymnastics is her strong suit, yet she is making an IMPRINT in the field of fitness and... stunts for film and television! Don't believe me? Check out her interview (oh, and her stunt video) located after the jump! You will be blown away!
Who are you?
Laurie SingerWhat do you do for a living?
Stunts for Film and Television
What inspired you to become a fitness instructor?
I wanted to share my knowledge of health and fitness with others. After graduating from NC State University and competing for the Wolfpack gymnastics, I was committed to continue to work out and stay fit. I became a personal trainer and fitness director in Raleigh, NC. Taking a leap of faith and moving to NYC, I then became a private trainer at Reebok Sports Club in Manhattan for 2 years prior to working in the film industry. My gymnastics background helped me learn the importance of staying healthy and taking care of my body, which naturally led me into the fitness world.
Talk to us about your fitness regimen.
I dance and watch what I eat. :) It always depends on what your specific fitness goals are to decide on what type of workout and what type of diet you need. Currently, I am maintaining my body to look less defined and just slim so I am eating a lot of Luna Bars, Turkey Wraps, and Skinny Vanilla Lattes. :)
Talk to us about your fitness competition experience. What were your expectations going in?
Competing fitness and figure competitions were fun, but also required much discipline, especially in regards to diet. My expectations going into the competitions were to have fun and do everything I could to give a great performance. I ended up placing first at the NPC New York and New Jersey State competitions in Fitness and Figure which was incredible and I was very thankful! Cool experiences!
Are you competing in any upcoming fitness competitions?
I am not competing in any upcoming fitness competitions. I enjoyed competing but I needed to stop to focus on what would help me in regards to work.
What are some of the services you offer as an stunt double? Who have you done stunts for? Anyone famous?
I feel blessed to say that I am a professional stuntwoman for SAG/AFTRA. I work for different films and television shows performing various stunts. :) The best way to look at my current work or projects is to check out this IMDB link. It will also show different actors I have doubled.

Discuss some of your struggles and successes an individual who performs stunts.
I am so thankful and always excited to work in films/tv because it is super fun and I love working with such creative and cool people. Every work day changes which I totally love. I could be working doing an explosion one day, water work the next, wire work, stair falls, hitting concrete, or high falls, or I could be moving mats and making sure I am there for safety reasons in case the actor wants to perform her own stunts. Regardless, it is great because the relationships you make are priceless. I have met some of my closest friends and coolest people through working. Being a stunt performer also comes with challenges because work is not guaranteed. You're always looking to line up that next gig and you try to make work as consistent as possible. A veteran I look up to once told me: You're only as good as your last stunt. That is great advice. You have to stay on your toes in this industry and work hard if you want to work full time. Even then, it is still not a guarantee.
I love working hard and having fun and I am so thrilled to be doing that. :)
There may be some up and coming personal trainers who are reading this right now. Any words of wisdom or advice?
My advice is to set your goals high and be an example for your clients by living what you preach. It is important to stay focused and show your clients healthy living, instead of just telling them what they should do. Be inspiring and do everything you can to help your clients stay motivated and on track towards their goals and make sure they HAVE FUN!
